Governance

South Bank Academies and its schools are governed by a Board of Trustees.  The Board is responsible for the Academy Trust and is accountable to the Secretary of State for its performance.

As part of the LSBU group, the Boards of Trustees of South Bank Academies, South Bank College and the LSBU Board of Governors have established a committee of the Boards known as the Group Nomination Committee (for information about the Group Nomination Committee please click here). To enable the committee to discharge its duties, it will establish, from time to time, institutional panels to recruit governors or trustees within the group. Under delegated authority from the committee, the SBA panel recommends potential SBA ‘independent’ trustees to the SBA Board for approval.

To support the Board in its role, the Board has established several committees:

  • Audit & Finance Committee which is responsible for monitoring internal controls and risk management within the trust.  The Chair of the audit committee is Richard Flatman. For further information, please see here.
  • Quality Committee which is responsible for monitoring and reviewing the quality of education provided by the MAT. The Chair of the quality committee is Chris Mallaband. For further information, please see here.

The Board has established School Advisory Boards to provide local governance for each school.  The membership of the SABs comprises a maximum of twelve governors, which includes up to seven co-opted members, the school principal, up to two elected parents or guardians of a pupil and up to two members of staff.

Each School Advisory Board appoints link governors who are responsible for the following areas of delegated responsibility (see Terms of Reference for School Advisory Boards here): Safeguarding and Well-being, Education, Equalities (including Pupil Premium and SEN), Employment, Engagement and Personal Development.

The School Advisory Boards meet between four and six times during the academic year. There are three ordinary business meetings per year and between one and three strategy meetings per year. In addition, the link governors make a minimum of two school visits in an academic year.
